Man pays for hitting children
14-Mar-2008 11:32 AM

A 32-YEAR-old man was fined $150 yesterday for assaulting two children and was reminded that he was living in the new era.

Josevata Liwanacagi of Naiborebore village in Tailevu appeared before Magistrate Vani Ravono in Tailevu Magistrate Court pleading guilty to one count of act with intent to cause grievance harm.

The court was informed that Liwanacagi used a lemon branch and assaulted two children, who were making a lot of noise, while swimming in the river beside his home.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Ali Subhan said one of the two children suffered two broken fingers as a result of the assault.

The child informed the parents and the matter was reported to police and the accused was arrested and charged.

In mitigation Liwanacagi said he was trying to correct the two children.

Liwanacagi was ordered to pay the complainant compensation within 28 days, in default, 3 months imprisonment.

Liwanacagi was also bounded over for the sum of $200.

How do you feel about the rise in fuel prices and increase in taxi and bus fares?
Aritema Navonicagi, 52 “Well in my opinion it is quite early to increase bus and taxi fares because Fiji is not settled politically.”
Nemaniu Qalo, 47 “The bulk of Fiji’s population live in the low income category and we low income earners have very little control over this increase. It will eventually affect everything else, especially food which is the source of livelihood.”
Tara Wati, 50 “I spend approximately $4.50 from my home to the place I sell food every day. I receive very little profit after I deduct all my expenses.”
