School gets computers lab
5-Feb-2010 08:06 AM

Nearly 40 percent of pupils at Vishnu Deo primary school have never touched a computer.
But that’s about to change.

On Thursday, The Rotaract Club of Suva donated four refurbished computers to the school.

“The computer opens doors to unlimited opportunities,” said Rotaract Club president Jacinta Hesaie.

The school aims to improve computer literacy by providing basic lessons for students who do not have computers at home.

Thirteen-year-old Mereseini Tauyaru is excited to use a computer for the first time.

“If we have a project we can do it on the computer”, she said.

Of the 178 pupils at the school, only 20 percent have knowledge about computers, said the school’s principle, who hopes to dramatically increase that figure.

“We would like every child to have some basic computer knowledge” said Pandit Bhuwan Dutt, President of Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji.

The donation gives students a vital resource to assist their learning.

As well as helping with research and word processing of projects, it also gives students a chance to surf the internet and play games.

The Rotaract Club, which supports community service projects for young adults within the area, organised a number of events, including an Arabian night, to raise funds for the donation.

How do you feel about the rise in fuel prices and increase in taxi and bus fares?
Aritema Navonicagi, 52 “Well in my opinion it is quite early to increase bus and taxi fares because Fiji is not settled politically.”
Nemaniu Qalo, 47 “The bulk of Fiji’s population live in the low income category and we low income earners have very little control over this increase. It will eventually affect everything else, especially food which is the source of livelihood.”
Tara Wati, 50 “I spend approximately $4.50 from my home to the place I sell food every day. I receive very little profit after I deduct all my expenses.”
