USP 32 month project to conclude this week
10-Feb-2010 08:15 AM

The University of the South Pacific is holding an event this week to mark the conclusion of a 32 month project funded by the European Union.

USP is one of five institutions which have been taking part in the SideCAP project to improve distance learning across universities in the Pacific, Africa and the Carribbean.

The University has been developing material on how to improve student support and aims to enhance the quality of learning for distance students.

Project activities include workshops, reports, course materials and an interactive network.

European Union representative, Mr Robert De Raeve, said: We are the main funders of this project”.

“The main thing is to get all the regions of the ACP to work closer together with better cooperation”, he said.

USP joins the Open University in the UK, UHI in Scotland, University of Mauritius and the University of the West Indies on this project, which is led by Professor Frank Rennie of UHI.

Vice Chancellor of USP, Professor Rajesh Chandra, said: “The main objective of this workshop is to share material that each institution has developed”.

The University hopes to build on this project to move towards a more flexible and interactive approach to learning, with the help of new technologies.

The Final Dissemination Event runs at USP from 8-12 February.

How do you feel about the rise in fuel prices and increase in taxi and bus fares?
Aritema Navonicagi, 52 “Well in my opinion it is quite early to increase bus and taxi fares because Fiji is not settled politically.”
Nemaniu Qalo, 47 “The bulk of Fiji’s population live in the low income category and we low income earners have very little control over this increase. It will eventually affect everything else, especially food which is the source of livelihood.”
Tara Wati, 50 “I spend approximately $4.50 from my home to the place I sell food every day. I receive very little profit after I deduct all my expenses.”
