Lady adds spice snooker
6-Feb-2010 03:40 PM

IN the first of its kind, a lady, Sharon Morrel, will be part of the annual Farmers Northwest Snooker Championship at the Tavua Club starting today.

Tournament executive Philip Gock has confirmed Morrell of the Nadi Sports Club will be the only female participant and she will be up against the males at the two-day championship which ends tomorrow.

Gock said close to 34 snooker players have confirmed participation.

He said having Morrel in the mix would bring a new dimension to the competition.

“She’s the surprise package in this year’s championship,” said Gock.

“It’s great to have her play alongside the males and it will only help her improve her game against some of the seniors in the sport.”

Gock said the players need to be at their best because they will be ranked after the meet.
“The players will be ranked accordingly after the championship on Sunday.”

Defending champion Nitesh Chand is the top seed with Mahen Deo seeded second.

The winner this weekend walks away with $250 while the runner-up to settle for $200.

Gock said players from Nadi, Lautoka, Ba and Tavua will be part of the championship.

How do you feel about the rise in fuel prices and increase in taxi and bus fares?
Aritema Navonicagi, 52 “Well in my opinion it is quite early to increase bus and taxi fares because Fiji is not settled politically.”
Nemaniu Qalo, 47 “The bulk of Fiji’s population live in the low income category and we low income earners have very little control over this increase. It will eventually affect everything else, especially food which is the source of livelihood.”
Tara Wati, 50 “I spend approximately $4.50 from my home to the place I sell food every day. I receive very little profit after I deduct all my expenses.”
