SECOND TIME LUCKY - 9-Oct-2009
It is the second time the warning was issued to Fiji Islands within a week but we were lucky and safe say DISMAC officer Pajiliai Dobui.
Dobui said they were pleased with the quick reaction from the relevant authorities and the general public but people should not get complacent as Fijie may not be so lucky the next time.
Dobui said DISMAC was currently working on a pilot project to come up with a tsunami evacuation plan for the major centers.
He said they wouldl also try and carry out a study to ascertain which areas people could evacuate on foot and not use their vehicles in attempts to move to higher ground.
Director Meteorology and chairman for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, Rajendra Prasad confirmed yesterday the tsunami warning was cancelled for the Fiji islands.
Prasad said there is a possibility that there will be rough seas and big swells and people should be prepared for that.
