Former president Donald Trump launched a social media app called Truth Social last Sunday evening, which unfortunately did not go well, due to technical issues.
The app suffered from technical difficulties right after the launch as it was unable to process the basic account signup feature. The official website initially announced there was partial outage, which lasted for more than 7 hours. The status page of the website mentioned that although the app is running, user creation is currently rate-limited but will expand its capacity in the future.
Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), the developer of the social media app, did not respond quickly to news media outlets that contacted them last Monday. TMTG CEO former congressman Devin Nunes later told Fox News that the app will have a complete roll out by the end of March. Nunes added that their goal is to make the app fully operational throughout the whole country. In the meantime, the app is currently available for download only at the Apple App store.
Feedback about Truth Social
Truth Social’s layout is very similar to Twitter’s and that its mission is to give conservatives their own platform, especially if they feel their freedom of speech is not supported by popular social media channels like Meta (FB) and Twitter. According to CNN, the social media already has a waiting list of at least 150,000 signups.
The development and the whole operation of the social media is under scrutiny as there have been reports of restricted boundaries in downloading the app. Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu shared his thoughts via Twitter, noting how Truth Social can’t even handle opening new accounts, making the app’s capability to keep user accounts safe from hackers. According to Congressman Lieu, since the problems won’t be fixed until the end of March, it appears that only Nunes and the friend of his cousin are the only people working on the app’s coding.
